Inside the Brammo Empulse Electric Motorcycle

It’s no secret electric cars are determinedly making their way into American driveways.  Owning a Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model S doesn’t necessarily brand a person as an “early adopter” the way it may have in earlier years.  The same can’t be said for electric motorcycles just yet.  But by the looks of the Brammo Empulse R, motorcycle enthusiasts could soon be motivated to plan their next cruise around a charging network.

In the video above Brammo’s Director of Product Development, Brian Wismann explains why the Empulse R could be a viable alternative to gas-powered bikes.  Perhaps most importantly, the Empulse packs a punch off the line that shouldn’t leave riders wondering where the beef is.  From Green Car Reports:

“The motor is impressively small for the torque and power it produces. An Empulse R produces 66 ft-lbs of torque, more than a gasoline Kawasaki Ninja 650 (47 ft-lbs) and almost as much as a Ducati Streetfighter 848 (69 ft-lbs).”

To make the most of its electric grunt, the Empulse utilizes a six-speed transmission that is fully integrated into the motor.  The setup is geared for impressive acceleration as a well as top speed.

Despite the fun factor, the Empulse would be hard to appreciate if it wasn’t able to juice-up along the country’s charging infrastructure.  Luckily the Empulse is compatible with the J-1772 charging cables that are used at public charging stations.  Its 3-kilowatt onboard charger is the largest of any production motorcycle – nearly proportionate to the onboard chargers on some plug-in electric cars.  The bike also comes with a 110-volt charging cord that can draw power from a household outlet.

With enough torque to pull a nearly silent wheelie, the Brammo Empulse R is a definite conversation starter.  Riding one wouldn’t necessarily make a person “eco-friendly”.  They might just like to have fun.
